From City to Space: Why Sculpture?
JISP is deeply rooted in the heart of Shanghai’s historical and cultural core, Jing’an District. Held biennially, it has become a renowned public art and cultural brand in Shanghai and China. Since its inception in 2010, it has evolved from “City Fantasy”, “Pride of City”, “City Paradise”, “City Rebirth” to “City Unbounded”, narrating a decade-long journey of art education in Jing’an and Shanghai. In 2020, JISP embarked on a new decade with the theme “Space”, where the focus moves from city to space with last year’s “Reshaping Space”, adopting a macro to micro perspective, and emphasizing iterative innovation.
The meaning of “sculpture” has also been expanded and enriched along with JISP’s growth and the city’s rejuvenation. As each edition has seen an increase in quality, recognition, and public participation, more outstanding works by top domestic and international artists converge at the Jing’an Sculpture Park, which helps set the trend of pursuing quality public space art in Shanghai, and sets up a crucial platform for showcasing sculpture art and exploring its future. Meanwhile, the “Space” series continually innovates in form and scale, bringing sculpture art from parks to neighborhoods. By combining high-level forums and captivating activities, it promotes art sharing in new domains, fosters academic discussions, encourages various forms of public participation, and gives full play to the interactive nature of public art. It brings public art closer to the lives of citizens, enhancing artistic appreciation and adding color to people’s lives.
Space Evolution, Boundless Fusion: 24-Hour Opening Art Musuem in Park
In order to further implement the crucial concept that “People’s City”, promote new practices of open, shared, and inclusive in green space, and uphold the “International Jing'an and Outstanding City” city position strategy, the 7th JISP will take “Space Evolution” as the theme, actively echoing with key events that the park is removing the wall and opening for the public all day. The exhibition features select works by international masters and domestic artists, cross-disciplinary works in architecture and design, as well as indoor exhibitions such as “The Fish Have a Dream: Lin Mingjie Art Exhibition” and “East, West, South, North & Middle: National College Teacher Sculpture Exhibition”. Through broken and integrated boundaries between the art, citizen, park, and city, between the main exhibition area and extended exhibition area, JISP transparently demonstrates the double evolution in which the Jing’an Sculpture Park removes the walls in the dimensions of time and space and creates the new “24-Hour Opening Art Museum in the Park” city identity.
Space Profile, Diverse Interaction: “Park+” Initiative
This year’s JISP transforms the concept of the extended exhibition area into a “Park+” space profile practice, responding to the “15-Minute Community Life Circle”. The connection of nine communities ignites public art’s vibrancy and enriches artistic expression, covering Daning Jiuguang Center, Guotai Junan Green Land, Pengpu Xincun, SHANGHAI SUHEWAN MIXC WORLD (Shanghai Suhewan Park), Sanquan Park, Shanghai Shixi High School, Zhen Ning Fresh Market, CITIC Square, and Chan-so-ho Garden. These connections dive deep into the community culture, engage the public and provide a custom-designed urban exploration guide, where residents and visitors can enjoy a day of artistic immersion that truly represents Shanghai and Jing’an. This extended spatial planning reinforces the connections and evolutions between people and spaces, contributing to the formation of a city art and culture urban complex centered around the Jing’an Sculpture Park.
