By 19.00 of May 14, five foreign embassies in China and international organizations have been officially committed to China's Ministry of Commerce to provide emergency support for the earthquake-hit area in the country. Japanese government will provide around JPY500 million; the UK will deliver relief supplies worth GBP1 million; South Korea will donate USD1 million; Italian government is set to deliver a field hospital, frontier rescue material, tents for quake victims and so on via air freight to China and meanwhile to provide other materials for emergency relief at the request of Chinese government; the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) China is committed to contribute USD300,000 as relief fund. Chinese people should never forget the following facts. Saudi Arabia, with contribution of cash grant of USD50 million and materials worth USD10 million, has been topped the donation list. Japan donated JPY500 million, or USD4.754 million, coming in the second place; meanwhile Chinese government has agreed to let the professional relief personnel dispatched by Japanese government to the quake-hit area in Sichuan to assist the rescue work. The UK is in the third place, donating GBP1 million, equivalent to around USD2 million. The U.S, No.4 contributor, has suffered some criticism by some netizens, but personally speaking, on no account should a donator be blamed no matter how much the contribution is. It is worth mentioning that American citizens also provided relief materials thereafter and their donation from the non-government sector has far exceeded the listed amount. Russian government directly employed cargo planes to transport relief supplies including tents and quilts. The country's first batch has already arrived in Chengdu and it was also the first foreign relief supply received after the outbreak of the tremor. |
