In the Qing Dynasty, on every Apr.8th of lunar calendar, local farmers would visit Jing'an temple and walked their cows around it. Since then this cow-walking had become a tradition though the exact year remained unknown. On the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, known as the birthday of Sakyamuni in Chinese Buddhism, all Buddhist temples will hold various religious and alms giving activities as well as temple fairs. Back to the early days, the Guang'fu Temple was as famous as Jing'an Temple for this special day. Later due to geographical limits, Jing'an Temple became more popular within and even outside Shanghai. By the Qing Dynasty, the Buddhist event in Jing'an Temple every 8 of Apr. was seen as a famous folk custom and entertained people of all ages and different places. Since Apr. 8th happened to be the time when farmers started planting summer crops, some people carried their cows and walked around the temple hoping the cows be blessed by Buddha so that a successful planting and a great harvest in autumn can be ensured. |
